I remember sitting in my counseling class as we discussed the hard struggles of life. The true meaning was summed up not by what happens to us, but by our reactions to what happens to us. One of the most meaningful things we had to practice was how to help people deduce what the action or circumstance in question meant to the person. Not the surface stuff, but the gut level meaning. What meaning a person attributes to his or her circumstance will determine the level of trauma the person is experiencing.
